Rules and Timing



Eligibility criteria

Only intercontinental journalist teams consisting of at least one Sub-Saharan African and one Flemish journalist are eligible to apply. Additional international team members are free to join.

In order to be eligible for application, teams must ensure that their story will at least be published in Flanders and in the African journalist's country. Therefore, during the application procedure they will be asked to upload letters of intent for publication from at least one Flemish and one African news platform.

Submitted story proposals need to fall into the general scope of the UN's 17 sustainable development goals:

  1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere;
  2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture;
  3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages;
  4. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all;
  5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls;
  6. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all;
  7. Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all;
  8. Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all;
  9. Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation;
  10. Reduce inequality within and among countries;
  11. Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable;
  12. Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns;
  13. Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts;
  14. Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development;
  15. Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss;
  16. Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levers;
  17. Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.


There are three plus one application rounds over a course of roughly six months, with application deadlines on 24 December 2015, 1 April 2016 and 1 June 2016, and an additional one on 15 July 2016. The specific timing is as follows:

  • December 1st — launch of the project and of the first application round
  • December 14th — project website and application module online
  • December 24th — DEADLINE of the first application round at 11.59 pm Brussels time
  • Appr. January 15th 2016 — first jury meeting
  • March 1st — launch of the second application round
  • April 1st — DEADLINE of the second application round at 11.59 pm Brussels time
  • Appr. April 15th — second jury meeting
  • May 1st — launch of the third application round
  • June 1st — DEADLINE of the third application round at 11.59 pm Brussels time
  • Appr. June 15th — third jury meeting
  • July 15th — DEADLINE of the additional, fourth application round at 11.59 pm Brussels time
  • Appr. August 15th — fourth jury meeting
